Thapa Family, Who Lost Home and Loved Ones in Landslide, Receives New House

Kathmandu, 14 Jul: For Lila Thapa of Shyampati, Namobuddha Municipality-1 in Kavrepalanchok, the night of September 6, 2024 (Bhadra 21, 2081 BS) brought the darkest tragedy of her life. A massive landslide swept down from above her home, destroying everything in its path. Not only did she lose her house, but the devastating slide also took the lives of her grown son and daughter.

Left homeless and shattered, the Thapa family struggled through unbearable days and nights in the aftermath. Witnessing their plight, Savers Action Nepal, an organization dedicated to social service, stepped in to help. The organization built a new house for the family and officially handed it over in a program held on Sunday.

Tears of joy welled up in Lila Thapa’s eyes as she received the keys to her new home. Holding them tightly, she said, “Happiness has returned to my life. I will now try to live in peace again.”

On Bhadra 21 of last year (September 6, 2024), a landslide that came crashing down from above their house claimed the lives of Lila Thapa’s eldest daughter, Lalisha Thapa, and youngest son, Krishna Thapa. The landslide completely destroyed their home.

In response, Savers Action Nepal built a new house for the Thapa family at a cost of NPR 1.2 million and officially handed it over.

This is just one of many initiatives by Savers Action Nepal, which has long been working to support students in remote areas and help disaster-affected communities.

Chairperson Acharya Pasang Wangdi Sherpa expressed that being able to support families who are struggling not only with shelter but also food and clothing is a source of happiness. He affirmed the organization’s commitment to continuing such humanitarian efforts in the days to come.

The house was handed over in the presence of Kunzang Lama, the Mayor of Namobuddha Municipality.

The handover ceremony was also attended by Ward Chairperson of Namobuddha-1 Prem Lama; Khenpo Chonyi Rangdol, Chairperson of Thrangu Monastery, Namobuddha; Vice Chairperson Lama Karma Phurbu; Chairperson of Namobuddha Ghyang Guthi Lobsang Lama; and journalist Phunu Sherpa, among others.
