North Korea has intensified its investigation into the failed launch of a naval destroyer. Meanwhile, the country has managed to right the warship that had capsized in the sea. The vessel has now been docked at the port of Chongjin in northeastern North Korea, where repair work is underway.
Satellite images show the once-tilted destroyer now upright and afloat. However, the full extent of the damage sustained by the ship remains unknown. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the next phase of repairs will begin only after a close inspection near the ship’s hull. Further maintenance is expected to take place at a dry dock in the nearby port of Rajin and is projected to last between 7 to 10 days.
State-run media reported that during a launch ceremony on Wednesday in the northeastern port of Chongjin, a 5,000-ton naval destroyer was involved in an accident. The ship was damaged after the rear section—responsible for transportation linkage—broke apart. Satellite images had shown the ship capsized to one side in the water.
Reports indicate that four shipyard officials have been detained in connection with the failed launch. This vessel is said to be North Korea’s second destroyer-class warship. Following the failed launch, Kim Jong-un reportedly expressed intense anger and ordered a thorough investigation, calling for severe punishment of those responsible.
North Korea’s navy is considered significantly weaker than its rivals, which is why the country has been steadily deploying more destroyer warships. The recently damaged vessel is said to be similar to another warship launched in April. It was designed to handle various types of weapons systems, including air and anti-ship weapons, as well as nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles.
According to South Korean officials and experts, the North Korean destroyer was built with assistance from Russia.
In conclusion, North Korea’s failed warship launch has raised serious concerns within the regime, prompting swift investigations and repair efforts. The damaged destroyer, now docked and undergoing inspection, reflects both the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its naval capabilities and the technical challenges it faces. The incident has led to the detention of shipyard officials and strong reactions from Kim Jong-un, highlighting the strategic importance placed on military advancements. With reported Russian support in construction, this event also underscores broader geopolitical implications in the region.
