Charlotte Walker, a 21-year-old from South Australia, has become the youngest senator in Australia’s history. She won a seat in the state’s Upper House (Sixth Legislative Council) representing the Labor Party.
On the night of her election, which coincided with her birthday, Walker said:
“There will certainly be pressure, but I want to inspire other youth—especially women—to choose this path.”
Speaking to ABC News, she added:
“I want to do good work for South Australians and show young women that this is possible. Most people my age never get to go to Canberra or contribute like this, so I’m very excited. I still have a lot to learn, but I feel positive.”
Record-Breaking Achievement
-
Walker is the youngest person ever elected to Australia’s Senate.
-
The youngest federal parliamentarian remains Wyatt Roy from Queensland, elected to the House of Representatives at age 20 in 2010.
Unconventional Political Rise
Walker, who chaired the Young Labor faction in South Australia, was surprisingly fielded for the traditionally unwinnable third seat. Starting July 1, she will attend “Senate School” to learn parliamentary procedures.
“This is a place of service, and I’ll need to adapt to a busy schedule,” she said.
Early Life and Education
Her journey began in Normanville on the Fleurieu Peninsula, where she attended:
-
Yankalilla Area School
-
Investigator College in Victor Harbor
After graduating in 2022, she studied at the University of Adelaide and worked for the Australian Services Union—a job she must now resign from.
Focus on Youth and Social Issues
Walker plans to prioritize:
-
Living costs
-
Rental pressures
-
Balancing education and family duties
As part of Labor’s left wing, she receives guidance from Senators Karen Grogan and Penny Wong, who call her “a sharp, values-driven woman who’ll enrich the Senate.”
Family’s Role
Her family’s support has been pivotal:
“My mom always jokes, ‘You’ll be Prime Minister someday.’ Coming from rural Normanville—where no one has ever reached federal parliament—I hope she feels proud.”
Congratulatory Messages
-
Natasha Stott Despoja (youngest female senator in 1995 at 26) hailed Walker’s win as “history-making” on social media.
-
Senator Don Farrell teased that she’s “very young and very lucky.”
