President Trump will be sworn on Monday

Washington DC (USA), 20th January: Donald Trump is taking the oath of office and secrecy as the 47th President of the United States on Monday morning local time. He was elected to the post of President in the election held on November 5. It is customary in the US for the elected President to assume power from January 20. The process of transferring power will begin after the oath-taking ceremony.

The swearing-in ceremony, which is expected to be attended by millions of citizens, will be held indoors this time due to inclement weather. Trump, who was elected president of the United States in 2016 with a business background, was elected for a second term in 2024 with a promise of comprehensive reform of immigration policy. He has already mentioned that he will implement policies such as climate change, immigration, health problems, and increasing taxes on foreign products.

With Trump’s inauguration, JD Vance will take over as Vice President and Marco Rubio as Secretary of State. Khagendra Gisi, a lawyer who has been living in the US for a long time, says that the president’s focus will be on the issues that Trump promised during the election. “The US economy was doing well, jobs were being created, but it has been found that citizens voted to solve the problem of increasing immigration, and we can expect a policy to come out accordingly in the coming days as well.”

mass evacuation

President Trump’s campaign slogan, “Mass deportation,” refers to the process of sending many people from the United States to their respective countries at once. Addressing a rally in New York on October 27, Trump said, “On the first day of my presidency, I will introduce a deportation program that will send criminals out of the United States.”

According to Pew Research, an American research company, a total of 36.9 million immigrants have residence permits in the United States in 2022. Of these, 23.4 million have obtained citizenship. Similarly, 11.5 million immigrants have received permanent residence facilities (green cards). In addition, 2 million have received temporary residence facilities (various categories of visas).

It is estimated that about 11 million immigrants in the United States do not have the legal right to be here. Of these, about 500,000 immigrants are reported to have been convicted of criminal activity in various jurisdictions in the United States. Many estimate that these people will be the first priority for deportation.

The data and information is maintained by the government agency U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which handles arrests, detentions, and deportations. Many expect the Trump administration to address this issue using executive authority on its first day in office.

They have applied for immigration to various units in the United States. But if their application is not approved, they may also be on the deportation list. Legal practitioner GC also estimates that there may be a program to send people with criminal backgrounds and who have already been ordered to leave the country by the court without approving their application.

In the case of Nepalis, he estimates that even though the court has rejected their applications in the past and ordered them to leave the country, a few thousand who have not left the United States may be on the deportation list.

Foreign relations

President-elect Trump has also said that he will end the war between Israel and Hamas and the Russian-Ukrainian aggression through negotiations. However, a ceasefire agreement was reached between Israel and Hamas before his inauguration, and the agreement has been in effect since Sunday. It remains to be seen what shape the Russia-Ukraine conflict will take after his inauguration.

The US has been spending a huge amount of money globally. But he has committed to making and implementing a new policy regarding the mobilization of taxes paid by citizens. In this regard, what his new policy will be has become a matter of waiting for many. If a new policy is introduced accordingly, it can be estimated that various development and human rights programs run by US aid agencies may be affected.

For some countries trading with the US, the plan to impose a 25 percent tax on imported goods appears to be challenging for them to survive in the US market. It is also seen that the health sector will be affected. Globally, the United States is one of the countries that spends a lot of money on the health sector. The United States has been spending about 10 billion dollars annually on programs related to global human health. It is understood that the Trump administration is likely to have a conservative mindset in this regard as well.

Pharmacist Dr. Shyam Karki, who has lived in the US for 50 years, said, “The US has been supporting people around the world through various programs in the health sector. If spending is cut, it could also affect countries like Nepal. There is a possibility that immigration and tax-related issues will be a priority for President Trump’s administration rather than health.”

Karki says that the legal residency of about ten thousand Nepali immigrants who benefited from ‘Temporary Protected Status’ may end. Tirtharaj Pandey, who has been running a business in the US, sees the possibility of creating investment opportunities with Trump’s return. He said, “The capital market here is expected to welcome Trump as president. He even visited the New York Stock Exchange after being elected president to boost investor morale.”
