Why are Tamang leaders being forced out one after another? What is this systematic oppression about?

“Come, let’s uncover the truth—from beginning to end—in today’s video.”
“The hidden realities are being exposed today.”

Kathmandu, 16 Aug: Since the rise of Prithvi Narayan Shah’s rule, the Tamang community in Nepal has faced relentless political, economic, cultural, and social exploitation and oppression under successive regimes. The Shah dynasty rulers systematically relegated Tamang to menial roles—forced into labor as porters, shepherds, and low-status workers—while their daughters were treated as objects of entertainment in the courts of the Ranas and Shah kings.

Thousands of Tamang youth were compelled to change their surnames to Magar or Gurung to enlist in the army. While this granted some economic mobility, it permanently stripped them of their ancestral Tamang identity. Even when young leader Hit Bahadur Tamang was appointed Youth and Sports Minister in Prime Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai’s cabinet, fierce opposition from within the Maoist party forced his resignation within a week.

Key Injustices Highlighted:
– Historical erasure of Tamang identity under state coercion
– Economic exploitation disguised as “employment”
– Political sabotage against Tamang representation
– Cultural dehumanization (e.g., treatment of Tamang women)

How long must a community endure systemic humiliation before reclaiming its dignity? The Tamangs’ struggle mirrors Nepal’s unresolved legacy of caste-based oppression—where justice remains deferred, and self-respect is still fought for, not granted.

In a deeply troubling incident that underscores the systemic challenges faced by indigenous leaders in Nepal, Law Minister Sher Bahadur Tamang was compelled to submit his resignation on Tuesday amid emotional scenes. The minister broke down in tears as he stepped down following controversy over his remarks concerning Nepali medical students studying in Bangladesh. This painful episode represents yet another instance of Tamang political figures being pushed out of positions of authority under pressure.

The pattern of exclusion continues with the recent removal of Energy State Minister Kanchha Ram Tamang, a Congress party representative, through a coordinated move by the ruling coalition partners Congress and UML under Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s leadership. These back-to-back incidents lay bare the persistent marginalization of Tamang voices within Nepal’s political power structures.

What emerges from these developments is a disturbing continuity of historical oppression against the Tamang community. While occasionally granted token representation, Tamang leaders consistently find themselves vulnerable to immediate dismissal whenever their presence becomes inconvenient for the dominant political forces. The emotional resignation of Minister Tamang, forced to leave office in tears, serves as a particularly poignant symbol of this systemic disenfranchisement.

These events cannot be viewed in isolation, but rather as part of a longstanding pattern of political exclusion that has plagued Nepal’s indigenous communities for generations. The Tamang community, despite being one of Nepal’s largest indigenous groups, continues to face barriers to meaningful political participation and representation. The recent resignations and dismissals demonstrate how easily hard-won positions can be taken away, reinforcing the community’s peripheral status in the nation’s power dynamics.

The circumstances surrounding these incidents raise serious questions about Nepal’s commitment to inclusive democracy and the protection of minority rights. As the country continues its democratic development, these cases of political marginalization highlight the urgent need for institutional reforms that can ensure equitable participation for all communities in the nation’s political processes.

Congress Party’s Grand Design to Remove Tamang Leaders Exposes Systemic Marginalization

The appointment of Bahadur Singh Lama as Chief Minister of Bagmati Province from the Congress party might appear as progress, but the reality reveals a more troubling pattern. Behind the scenes, the same Congress party orchestrated a calculated move to undermine Tamang leadership, demonstrating how token representation often serves as a smokescreen for deeper exclusion.

The systematic sidelining of popular figures like Kulman Ghising, the deliberate isolation of outspoken and impartial leaders like Kancha Ram Tamang within Congress factions, and the suppression of strong voices like Bahadur Singh Tamang all point to a persistent agenda. Rather than rewarding competence and dedication, Congress prioritizes loyalty to internal factions and power brokers, ensuring that only those who align with their interests rise—while independent Tamang voices are pushed aside.

This is not merely political maneuvering; it reflects a long-standing tradition of neglect toward the Tamang community. From historical exclusion to superficial inclusion in name only, Nepal’s power structures continue to enforce a silent but brutal caste and ethnic hierarchy. The Tamang community, despite its significant presence, remains trapped in a cycle of marginalization—where even hard-earned positions can be snatched away the moment they threaten entrenched interests.

The message is clear: true inclusion remains elusive. Until political parties move beyond tokenism and confront their institutional biases, the Tamang community—and other marginalized groups—will continue to face the same old barriers, just repackaged in the language of false progress.
