Kathmandu, 6 Jan: The Ministry of Home Affairs has warned of strict action against anyone involved in activities that disrupt religious and social harmony. Stating that violence is being incited in some districts of the Terai–Madhes region through the misuse of social media, the Ministry said such individuals will be brought within the ambit of the law.
In a press release issued on Monday, the Ministry expressed serious concern over the recent anarchic activities witnessed in places including Dhanusha. Ministry spokesperson Anand Kafle informed that action has already been initiated against those who use social media to target specific communities and religions and engage in violent acts such as vandalism, arson, and looting.
To bring the situation under control and maintain harmony, special security meetings were held on Sunday and Monday under the leadership of the Home Minister. Following discussions with security officials from 21 districts of the Terai, officials from various commissions, and community leaders, the Ministry has urged everyone to exercise restraint and remain vigilant.
The Ministry has also reminded that hate speech aimed at disrupting harmony between castes and communities, insulting or defaming others, and encouraging criminal activities is punishable by law. It has made it clear that anyone involved in such activities, from anywhere, will not escape accountability and will face legal action.
The Ministry has further appealed to all to uphold tolerance by respecting one another’s existence in this multi-ethnic and multi-religious country.
Note: There has long been infiltration in the Terai–Madhes region with the intention of spreading religious conflict. I urge all Nepalis to remain alert against such activities. As religion and caste are highly sensitive issues, I appeal to everyone to stay united and uphold harmony, goodwill, and brotherhood. There is no doubt that anyone who engages in activities contrary to the law will face strict action.
