Sudan Gurung of “Hami Nepal” Suggests Prioritizing Rescue of High-Risk Individuals at Home Ministry Meeting

Kathmandu, 5 Oct: Sudan Gurung, coordinator of Hami Nepal, presented his suggestions at a meeting organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs to discuss rescue operations for those affected by floods, landslides, and other disasters caused by continuous rainfall.

Participating in the meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority under the Home Ministry, Gurung shared his recommendations with Executive Chief Dinesh Prasad Bhatt and other officials.

He emphasized that those in the highest-risk zones should be rescued first. Gurung also suggested prioritizing individuals stranded along highways based on their level of risk.

“Those in ambulances must be rescued first. When ambulances get stuck mid-route, patients are left in life-or-death situations,” he said. “We need to identify where ambulances are and how to rescue them. We can save lives by rescuing the most vulnerable first.”

Gurung also discussed the need to arrange temporary shelters for displaced people, estimating how many tents would be required and where they should be set up.

He further stated that coordination with the Ministry of Health and Population was essential to identify the locations of health posts and keep them on alert, particularly in high-risk areas. According to him, injured, sick, or pregnant individuals should be given treatment priority, and through better coordination with health posts and ambulances, timely medical care could be ensured.

On Saturday night, Gurung and his team visited flood-displaced families along the Bagmati River in Kathmandu to provide relief materials.

Two days earlier, he had announced through a Facebook video that Hami Nepal would completely separate itself from the Gen-Z movement. Gurung, who rose to prominence during the Gen-Z protests, had also been involved in the process of appointing Sushila Karki as Prime Minister and attended her swearing-in ceremony. He had previously made public comments about ministerial appointments as well.

“Now, we have decided to completely separate Hami Nepal from the Gen-Z movement. Hami Nepal is a social organization and will remain focused solely on social work as before,” Gurung said in the video.

He explained that Hami Nepal has long been raising its voice against social ills, corruption, and injustice.

In another video posted Saturday night, Gurung criticized some local government heads for failing to cooperate despite being part of a “people’s government.” He did not name specific municipalities but said,

“We found that some mayors and local representatives are not cooperating. Many roads are blocked, and people are trapped by landslides.”

He mentioned that since early morning, all Hami Nepal teams had been engaged in rescue and relief operations.

“If anyone is stranded and watching this video, please contact the Disaster Authority at 1149,” he urged. “So far, we’ve seen helicopters and ministers being used only for visits. Today, we told the Home Minister they should be used for actual rescues.”

Gurung also requested that locals provide information about possible helicopter landing zones. He said municipalities had already been informed about managing food and shelter for stranded people but noted,

“We have sent the necessary information to the municipalities about food and shelter, but we found their cooperation lacking.”
