Over 111,000 Russian soldiers identified as killed in war against Ukraine

A collaborative effort by Mediazona, the BBC Russian Service, and volunteers released on June 7 has resulted in the identification of 111,387 Russian soldiers who have died during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The list was compiled using open sources, though it is noted that not all deaths are publicly reported.

In the early stages of the war, regular army units, particularly airborne and motorized rifle troops, suffered the highest casualties. Throughout the summer and into the fall of 2022, the majority of losses were among volunteers. By the end of that year, the primary casualties shifted to former prisoners recruited by the Wagner Private Military Company for assaults on Bakhmut.

By March 2023, former prisoners became the largest category among the deceased. After the battles for Bakhmut, the use of prisoners in assaults nearly ceased. By September 2024, volunteer losses predominated again, which journalists attribute to a cumulative effect: prison recruitment decreased, no new conscription was announced, and volunteers continued to join the war effort against Ukraine.

As of June 6, the deaths of 5,138 officers from the Russian army and other security structures have been confirmed. This includes two deputy army commanders: Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky of the 41st Army and Major General Vladimir Frolov of the 8th Army.

The proportion of officers among the deceased has steadily decreased: from up to 10% of total losses in 2022 to just 2-3% by November 2024. This shift is attributed to changes in combat operations and the fact that most current losses are among volunteer and conscripted enlisted personnel.

The ages of the deceased were noted in 94,700 reports. In the first six months of the full-scale war, when only the regular army was fighting, most of the deceased were aged 21-23. In contrast, volunteers and conscripted soldiers are generally older: volunteers typically go to the front after age 30-35, while conscripted soldiers are usually over 25.

Preliminary data on deceased Russian soldiers was previously published by the BBC and Mediazona in early May, with the count at 106,745 at that time.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as of June 7, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Russian army has lost 995,030 soldiers killed and wounded. On June 6 alone, Russia lost 1,120 soldiers.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that since the beginning of 2025, Russian forces have lost 200,000 soldiers in Ukraine.
