Kathmandu, 16 Sep: The National Baptist Convention of Nepal (NBCN) has distributed relief materials to 300 families displaced by the Bhotekoshi River flood that struck on Bhadra 10 (August 26).
The relief materials were distributed at holding centers in various wards of Bidur Municipality, Nuwakot district. The assistance included essential household and daily-use items such as cooking pressure cookers, frying pans, plates, bowls, glasses, plastic buckets, water jugs, mosquito nets, towels, soap and sanitary pads.
Global Mission Nepal and the National Baptist Convention of Nepal have been providing relief support to families affected by the floods in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts under the leadership of their chief founder and CEO, Dr. Dan Pokharel, who is based in the United States. The organizations have been coordinating and working in collaboration with local government representatives and officials at holding centers to support relief and rehabilitation efforts for flood-affected families.
NBCN Chairman Yubaraj BK said the relief materials were distributed to ensure that displaced families would not face a shortage of basic household necessities after moving into new rooms.
Even before the distribution of the relief materials, NBCN Secretary Amos Khadka, Bagmati Province Chief Shambhu Shrestha (Paul), Santosh Sunam, Nabaraj Khadka, Dhurba Basnet, Ritu Adhikari, Madan Thami, Netra, Pasang Tamang, Ramesh Shiwakoti and other volunteers had been actively involved in purchasing supplies and providing support in flood-affected areas.
Receiving the relief packages, affected families expressed gratitude to the organization for providing essential assistance during the disaster. They said that after losing their homes, clothing and household belongings in the floods, the kitchen utensils, mosquito nets, hygiene products and menstrual health supplies had helped address some of their immediate needs.
The displaced families, however, said they also expected further support for permanent and safe rehabilitation, housing and livelihood opportunities. While immediate relief remains essential, they said they did not want to remain in temporary camps or holding centers for an extended period. They also called for the government’s announced rental assistance and rehabilitation programs to be implemented effectively.
NBCN Mission Director Dr. Narayan Sharma said the organization decided to distribute the relief materials after identifying an urgent need among displaced families for essential kitchen items and personal hygiene products.
Global Mission Director Milan Kumar Yasmali said additional relief materials would continue to be provided as needed.
The situation highlights the need for continued support from both government and non-governmental organizations to provide not only immediate relief but also safe, organized and sustainable rehabilitation for families who lost their homes and property in the floods.
