Many ethnics live in Nepal. Gurung is janajati, also calls Tamu. According to 2021 survey, Gurung’s population is 543800 in Nepal but many other Gurung live in India, United Kingdom(UK), America, Japan etc. So it’s almost population is 790080. Gurung speaks own native language specially western part of Nepal like Tanahun, Lamajung, Gorkha, Kaski and Parbat. Gurung has own script to write and read.
Many young Gurung join army. They like to join British Gurkha army and Indian army. They are brave to fight against enemy. Very few of Gurung joins Nepal army, Nepal police and Arm police force(sasastra prahari). Literacy rate is high among the Gurung community and financial condition is good. Most of them are high educated in Nepal but they are not interesting to serve Government jobs.
Gurung had a Ghale Raja(Ghale King) in the ancient period who ruled Gurung community. He was dismissed his crown by Nepali Raja(Nepal King) from a neighbor territory in 15 to 16 century.Â
Gurung people have rich in culture. They have a rich cultural heritage and traditional customs. They celebrate Tamu Lhosar as new year of Barga. They believe or count 12 barga. One barga is completed for 1 year and another barga comes, they welcome barga and celebrate Tamu Lhosar. Many of Gurung are Buddhist, some Hindu and few are Christian. They also celebrate Dashain, Tihar, Maghe sangrati etc. Gurung people perform rituals and prayers. They perform as Ghatu nach, Sorathi nach, chutka nach.Â
