Earthquake Update: The epicenter of the earthquake is the border area between Nepal and China (Tibet).

Kathmandu, 7 January: The epicenter of the earthquake that was felt in the Kathmandu Valley, surrounding areas, the Terai and eastern districts is initially estimated to be in the border area between Nepal and China (Tibet).

The earthquake was felt at around 6:50 am this morning. According to initial estimates, the earthquake measured 7 on the Richter scale in the area. Details about the damage caused by the earthquake are yet to be received.

 

7.0 magnitude earthquake confirmed in China’s Dinghe County

An earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale has struck Dinghe County in China’s Tibet province. The National Seismology and Research Center has reported that the earthquake struck at 6:50 am in the area along the Nepal-China border. Dinghe County borders Sankhuwasabha and Taplejung in southern Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim in the southeast.

The earthquake was felt in the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding areas, in the Terai and eastern Nepal districts of Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Udayapur, Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Panchthar, Ilam, Solukhumbu, Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung and others. After the tremors were felt, the general public came out of their homes and into open areas. Senior seismologist of the center, Lokvijay Adhikari, said that the powerful earthquake occurred in Dinge, about 100 kilometers north of the eastern border of Nepal.

The center defines an earthquake measuring six to eight on the Richter scale as a strong earthquake. An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck Nepal on April 25, 2015 , with its epicenter in Gorkha. For some time now, small earthquakes have been occurring continuously in western Nepal.

 

Prime Minister urges people to stay safe

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has urged everyone to stay safe from earthquakes. Writing on social media today, he said, “Today, small and large earthquake tremors are being felt in various parts. Everyone, please be alert and stay safe.”

The earthquake, which struck at 6:50 am this morning and had its epicenter in the border area between Nepal and China (Tibet), was felt in various districts of the country, including Kathmandu.
