Death toll in China earthquake rises to 95

January 7: A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County, southwest China’s Xinjiang Autonomous Region, on Tuesday morning. As of 3 p.m., a total of 95 people have been confirmed dead, while another 130 have been injured.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Tsogo Township, Dingri County, Shigao City at 9:05 a.m. Beijing time. There are 27 villages and about 6,900 people within a 20-kilometer radius of the epicenter. Dingri County has a population of more than 61,000, according to official statistics.

More than 3,400 rescuers and more than 340 health workers have been sent to the earthquake-affected areas. According to the weather forecast, the minimum temperature in Dingri will range from minus 18 to minus 14 degrees Celsius for the next three days.

Earthquake damages building at Sagarmatha National Park

The Thame Post Office building in Sagarmatha National Park in Solukhumbu has been damaged due to an earthquake. The park’s Chief Conservation Officer Sushma Rana informed that a crack has formed in the park building located in Thametyang, Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, Khumbu Pasang. Two employees were living in the one-story building made of stone.

According to Chief District Officer Anoj Kumar Ghimire, one house each in Deusa, Kharikhola and Thame in Khumbu has been damaged due to the earthquake. The local administration and security agencies have started monitoring the affected areas and collecting details of the damage. A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Dingyi County, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, China, at 6:50 am this morning.

Earthquake damages a house in Sankhuwasabha

A house has collapsed in Kimathanka, Bhotkhola Rural Municipality-1, Sankhuwasabha, due to a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Dingyi County, Xizang Autonomous Region of China at 6:50 am this morning.

The earthquake damaged the house of a local Tenchebi Sherpa, informed Sankhuwasabha Chief District Officer Binod Kumar Khadka. He said that the Sherpa’s two-story stone house, which was roofed with zinc sheets, had a crack. A family of seven had been living in the Sherpa’s house. They are safe.

District Administrator Khadka said that there was no human loss in the district due to the earthquake. Local level employees, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed to collect details of the damage.
