The stopover in Nepal from India visit
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan visited India on December 5–6, 2024, to strengthen ties in areas such as hydropower, trade, education, and environmental cooperation. He then transited through Nepal on his return, a move likely reflecting Bhutan’s effort to engage diplomatically with neighboring countries.
This time, China is keen to have formal diplomatic ties with Bhutan and has been pressing for an early settlement of the boundary issues between two countries. Bhutan however, has been mindful of India’s security concern especially in Doklam area located China-Bhutan-India tri junction. While Bhutan is keen to resolve the boundary issues, does not rush into any settlement that undermines India’s security.
King, who arrived here this morning for an unofficial visit, has returned home today. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, bade farewell to King Wangchuck at Tribhuvan International Airport. He visited Swoyambhunath ad Bouddhanath and paid homage and offered worship there.
